Codex Entry: The Whispershed
Region: Echowilds
Designation: Cryptid of Griefroot Echo and Silenced Groves
Known Alias: The Barkhowl, The Wound-Tree, That-Which-Drips Sound
Mythic Origin:
The Whispershed is said to have formed the first time a child of the Spiral screamed into a grove—and was not heard. Its body is part hollow stag, part rooted tree, with antlers like splintered branches and a back scarred with carved, unfinished glyphs. From its eyes, no tears fall—but from its barked wounds, sounds drip like sap.
Where it walks, the forest falls into perfect silence. Not absence of noise—the silencing of it. Owls forget to hoot. Wind forgets to rustle. Even the Seeker’s own heartbeat might pause.
Behaviors and Traits:
Leaves trails of carved bark shaped like screaming mouths
Emits a chorus of all cries ever swallowed in its presence
Only appears to those suppressing deep grief or unfinished mourning
May root itself temporarily, becoming indistinguishable from a sacred tree
Stalks those who lie during ancestral rites
Known Locations:
Wailing Hearthwood (Whispering Edge, Echowilds)
Dream Pools (Memoryroot Grove)
Occasionally manifests in Ancestral Hollow during Silence Rites
Seeker Trials:
Must speak aloud what they vowed never to say
Must grieve openly in sacred silence
Must choose whether to forgive themselves—or be swallowed into the canopy
Spiritual Function:
The Whispershed is the embodiment of suppressed expression. It doesn’t punish—it reminds. It is the grief that becomes a forest, the forest that becomes a creature, the creature that becomes a cry no longer buried.
Whisper of the Spiral:
“It heard your silence. That was enough.”— Selari of the Silenced Song
